Spark of Light religious freedom advocacy programs ensure that inmates do not leave their First Amendment religious rights at the jailhouse door. When an inmate reports incidents of abuse or discloses large policy problems, Aleph responds with extensive surveillance of prison practices and addresses these matters with prison and government officials to ensure state and federal prison compliance with the constitution and new federal laws that protect the religious and humanitarian rights of persons in institutional environments.
The Aleph Institute addresses the constitutional rights of Jews to obtain kosher food, and coordinate work schedules that respect the Sabbath and religious holidays as follows:
Kosher Diet
Guidance in the implementation of kosher cafeteria menus and support for inmates requests to receive kosher meals in order to keep the laws of kosher
Shelf-stable kosher meals and snacks for resale through the institutions canteen
Sabbath/Holiday Work Scheduling
Supplication for work proscriptions so inmates can observe holidays in accordance with Jewish law
Anti-Semitism Resolutions
Support for prisoners nationwide with religious discrimination cases
Institutional Handbook of Jewish Practice and Procedure
An invaluable reference book |

The Slopes - Situated in the heart of the Tatra Mountains, which is the peak of the Carpathians, a northeast offshoot of the Alps, Zakopane has some really good slopes for beginners through to more advanced skiers. The most impressive of the slopes is without doubt Kasprowy Wierch, its peak reachable by cable car from Kuznice. But do book you cable car tickets in advance as the queues can be hours long due to the car''s age (near on 80 years!) and restrictions in place to prevent the slope itself becoming too crowded. Once you''re up there you''ll enjoy a long ski down, but beginners beware as the slope can be tricky in parts so ask a local guide or check the map before attempting to ski it if you''re unsure. Others to check out include Nosal and Gubalowka which on clear days give you amazing views of the surrounding landscape.
The Prices ? The biggest tourist magnet in Zakopane is the incredibly low prices for just about everything. With lift passes starting around 7 pounds a day and equipment hire at a maximum |

The Gorges are deep rooted in Chinese history and culture, a symbol of their importance being the presence of the westernmost Gorge on the 5 Yuan banknote. But the Gorges of old are changing due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, which is expected to be completed in 2009. Due to its construction the river level has risen, making it wider whilst making the mountains appear lower. Whilst this has drawn criticism, the Chinese authorities responsible for the Dam have been quick to point out that the view will be different but by no means less spectacular and that the widening of the river will result in larger vessels travelling down in, increasing trade. More passengers will be able to view the dam from the larger ships which will operate along the river and the view could look even more spectacular as even though the mountains will appear smaller, the widening of the river will give a different sense of grandeur than before.
Often overlooked in favour of the Great Wall and Forbidden City when thinking of China, the Three Gorges are |

There are plenty of hot, sunny destinations accessible via train, and many other, not-so-sunny, destinations on your own doorstep. Train fares across Europe are creeping down in price all the time, and spending some time researching the comparative costs of singles, returns and indirect routes can yield some remarkably cheap journeys; and a clean conscience too!
If you are determined to go further afield for your holidays, then the usual paradox for booking flights holds true: either as far in advance as you can manage, or as close to when you want to leave as you dare. Of course, last minute booking is decidedly more risky a method than advance booking, but it can lead to the holy grail of low-cost flight-bookings: the flight that costs less than the tax.
If you''re undecided between several destinations abroad, it''s worth taking into account the relative exchange rates of each country. Considering the pound''s considerable economic heft around the globe, you should get value for money wherever you go, but there will inevitably be places where your money will take you a lot further than |

One possibility that''s gaining in popularity all the time is to take a sabbatical. Traditionally a possibility reserved for lecturers and academics, the sabbatical (or ''career-break'') is being offered within more and more companies. Of course, there are understandable contingencies for staff members wanting to take a sabbatical (usually a minimum of five years must have been spent at the company), but these are often met inadvertently, and are seldom a hindrance to someone who has arrived at the idea of a sabbatical. The most important thing to remember about sabbaticals - and the reason it''s attractive to many employers - is that it implies you only want a break from your career, and not that you want to quit it. Allowing their employees this opportunity means that employers will lose less staff in the long run: generally speaking, a sabbatical refreshes the career-drive and steels the work ethic; sating a desire that might otherwise have resulted in resignation. Even if your year off turns out to fill a gap between jobs, it is worth thinking of it as an experience that can enrich your |

Climbing mountains is serious business. Many people die each year from being ill prepared, or having accidents.
All the same, mountain climbing remains a trendy new activity for those who want to experience something other people only dream about.
If you have serious thoughts about climbing one of the Seven Summits - one of the top peaks of any of the seven continents - you should start training beforehand with a reputable climbing company. This is one sport where the training wheels are OFF. In the meantime, there is some haggling over which summits count.
Top Peaks in the World?
For those who''ve decided to take the Seven Summit challenge generally go by the list of Reinhold Messner, a mountaineer and explorer who was the first to climb all 14 peaks in the world 8,000 meters above sea level. Also one of the first men to climb Everest without an oxygen tank, and the first solo Everest climb. (He also lost a brother while climbing another mountain.)
Other sources have used the list by Richard Bass, the first man |

By day, discover quaint landmarks, embedded along the rocky coast, each with a connection to Ireland''s great literary tradition; from Thoor Ballylee, a Norman Tower on the Galway-Limerick Road, bought by the poet Yeat''s in 1917, to the Nora Barnacle Museum, the home of James Joyce''s wife. The neighbouring Aran Islands, unique, sparsely populated pockets of Ireland''s past, were immortalized in the work of playwright JM Synge, and make a wonderful day trip.
Take a plane to Inis Mor, the largest of the three islands, and witness tiny fields edged with crumbling stone walls. If you want to stay longer, Celtic Spirit, www.irish-culture.ch offer traditional holidays in the region, where you can immerse yourself in a forgotten culture, by learning basket weaving, set-dancing and the Irish language.
By night, stroll along the main streets and you are greeted by buskers, stilt-walkers and a carnival atmosphere. Eyre Square is the place to meet and greet, before heading off to a number of local bars - the boutique g hotel has an excellent cocktail bar with eccentric d?cor. For dinner, walk for a mile along |

Popular with tourists from all across the world, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage. It has a great many venues for live music and theatre on offer, such as the world-famous Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and the Palau de la Musica Catalana concert hall, and even hosts the famous Sonar Music Festival. It has all kinds of galleries housing great works of Spanish and Catalan art.
Take a walk along La Rambla, a bustling, cosmopolitan street popular with tourists and locals alike, stretching from the Placa de Catalunya towards the Mediterranean shoreline, and you will find cafes, street performers and market stalls. Barcelona offers a charming mixture of old Gothic architecture and modern skyscrapers such as the Hotel Arts and the Torre Mapfre.
But Barcelona is not simply the hustle and bustle of crowded streets: a tenth of the city is all parkland. The 203-hectare Montjuic is the largest park, whilst Ciutadella Park, situated where the old military citadel once stood, houses both the Parliament building and the zoo! Meanwhile, the city''s seven beaches make |
