Youre packed, but are you ready to go? Do you have absolutely everything that you will need for the next few months travelling around the globe? Here are a few things you really shouldnt forget.
When youre still in the planning stages of your trip you should get yourself comprehensive backpacker-specific insurance. Health and safety in many countries youll be visiting is your responsibility so make sure youre prepared for the worst.
You may only ever need plasters and painkillers, but you should still keep a first aid kit in your hand luggage, in case you are hit by something more damaging. Youre likely to suffer from Delhi-belly whilst youre away and not just in India either. Toilets and sanitation are likely to be unsanitary so keep re-hydration sachets and Imodium tablets to hand.
Whilst youre away youll no doubt take an immense amount of photographs, probably more than you can deal with and definitely more than you need. So instead of cropping and deleting too many while youre still on the road, periodically download them on to memory sticks and keep
copies for yourself and send copies back home in the post.
This way you wont risk losing your image library and you wont have to spend costly hours in Internet cafes painstakingly choosing which ones to save and which to discard.
Guard your passport with your life because it is the most valuable item you will take with you. However, if you do lose it, having a photocopy to provide to the authorities will make things much easier. Dont just rely on your airline tickets to tell you when youre flying, write it all down along with numbers to call if youre bank cards are lost or stolen.
You may feel a head torch unnecessary and it is most definitely a ticket to loserville, right? Well youre wrong. This small, inexpensive piece of kit can come in mighty handy in a variety of situations. From reading on a dark night bus to finding a safe route to the toilet on the campsite, you will be surprised just how useful a head torch can be.
You will probably walking long distances, hiking through rainforest, and climbing mountains so a rucksack is far more practical than a handbag or shoulder bag. Although it may look a little geeky, you can carry a rucksack safely on your front whilst still carrying your main bag on your back.
You should always take out travel insurance cover before going abroad. etravelinsurance.co.uk have a wide range of packages to suit travelers, such backpacker insurance or gap year travel insurance< if you are looking to go for a longer period of time.
